Under grant funding from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Robert Tallitsch of Augustana College conducted a study showing a 30% increase in student learning and retention using Cyber Anatomy’s products.
Teachers can use the software to produce detailed sequences highlighting scientific concepts, use multiple languages and grade-appropriate labeling, and define their own labels and functional descriptions to produce a customized learning experience.

The system provides a ‘Presenter’ interface that allows multiple views to be staged, recorded, and played back, allowing an instructor or student to prepare and save a session for later presentation to a group. The software also provides tools to support searches, quizzing, and links to individual rendered and labeled anatomy plates, including both the Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy and Grey’s Anatomy.
After initial development, we partnered with Elsevier, a market leading medical textbook publisher, to transform the core environment into Netter’s Interactive Anatomy Powered by Cyber-Anatomy. The product has subsequently been adopted by several leading medical schools, including Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, and the University of Chicago; and a host of international medical schools.
Our initial product, Cyber Anatomy Med, was developed in response to a need in third world countries that have difficulty obtaining cadavers for medical training due to religious and cultural reasons, and that do not have sufficient numbers of teachers to support anatomy instruction.
Cyber Anatomy is a virtual experience that presents a highly detailed model of the human body in a 3D visualization environment for direct interaction by a student or teacher. The model includes over 13,500 individually modeled and labeled elements – every structure in the human body larger than one millimeter – rendered and oriented with medical level accuracy. A highly intuitive interface allows the user to control the camera (rotate, pan, zoom in and out). The user can display and hide anatomical constructs, label landmarks and objects, and peel and re-orient individual items to explore the human anatomical structure. The software includes both male and female models, and provides an interface to concurrently review CT/MRI ‘slices’ that are correlated to the 3D human model. An interface is also provided that allows the user to concurrently review the Visible Human library, which is included through a licensing agreement with the National Institutes of Health.
